H1N1 confirmed in cat

The H1N1 virus has been confirmed in an Iowa cat, state health officials say.

The 13-year-old cat (which recovered) was found to have the virus after being tested at Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Radio Iowa reports. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) are reminding pet owners to closely monitor their pets health and consult a veterinarian if unusual signs develop.

Prior to the cat, the H1N1 virus had been confirmed in humans, pigs, birds, and ferrets. So far there appear to be no instances of humans catching the virus from animals.
